About Kadriorg Park
Peter the Great laid out Kadriorg Park in 1718 as an imperial pleasure ground around his summer palace, and 300 years later it remains Tallinn's green heart: 70 hectares of formal gardens, woodland, oak avenues, ponds and monuments. The name translates Catherinethal, Catherine's valley, for Peter's wife Catherine I, and the Italian architect Nicola Michetti set the layout on one long axis running up from the sea. It is free and open dawn to dusk, which is why locals walk their dogs here on Sunday mornings, students revise on the benches and families feed the swans. The formal core sits behind the palace, with box-hedge parterres, the Mirage fountain and the swan pond with its little gazebo. North of that is the Japanese Garden, designed by Masao Sone in 2011 and one of the finest in northern Europe. The Kumu museum occupies the eastern part, the working Presidential Palace the west, and Peter's original cottage, Peeter I majamuuseum, stands near the entrance. Every building in the park charges its own separate admission, so most visitors do the walk and pick one museum.
