Why people stay in Pärnu

Pärnu is Estonia's beach city — a long white-sand shore, a proper seafront promenade, spa hotels dating to the 1830s, and a summer population that swells the year-round 40,000 residents to well over 100,000 in July. The old town has wooden and Art Nouveau villas, the 15th-century Tallinn Gate (Estonia's only surviving city gate outside the capital), and the pedestrianized Rüütli tänav lined with cafés. The Pärnu River divides the town. At 9pm in July the beach is still busy and the promenade cafés are full.

Best summer destination in Estonia by a distance for anyone wanting a proper beach holiday. Skip October-April — the town goes into deep hibernation and half the restaurants close. The July festival calendar (Weekend, Pärnu Music Festival, Watergate) turns the place into a small Riga; book six months ahead if you want summer availability. Families dominate; the shallow bay is genuinely safe for children. Nightlife exists but is not the point.

Spa hotels along the beach (Estonia Resort, Strand, Hedon) dominate at $130-$260 in July, $85-$140 off-peak. Boutique guesthouses in the old town run $90-$160. Budget options and Airbnbs are $60-$110. Best areas: Rannaküla (the beach quarter) for beach access, the old town around Rüütli for restaurants and evening walks. Avoid anything on the Riga highway side of the river — it's a walk over the bridge to reach anything worthwhile.

Questions about Pärnu

When is Pärnu best?

Late June through mid-August for the beach. Early July for festivals but expect crowds and premium prices. Late August is the sweet spot — warm water, fewer people, everything still open.

Can I visit Pärnu as a day trip from Tallinn?

Yes but it wastes the point. Stay at least one night to catch the evening on the promenade. Day-trippers miss the twilight beach and sunset walk that make Pärnu Pärnu.
