4-star hotels in Tallinn
A shortlist of 4-star hotels in Tallinn, rated by real guests, for travellers who want the medieval Old Town, the Kalamaja wooden streets or a practical base outside the walls.
Staying in Tallinn
Tallinn is a complete medieval walled town with a start-up city bolted on: cobbles, bastions, Kalamaja's wooden streets and Telliskivi's bars. The Old Town is the real thing — 2 km of standing wall, twenty surviving towers, a functioning 1404 town hall, and a street plan that has not been rationalised. The lower town around Raekoja plats is merchants' Tallinn; Toompea, up the limestone hill through Pikk jalg gate, was where the nobility and the bishops sat. Come at 8am and the cobbles between Pikk and Lai are empty and echoing; come at 1pm in July, when three cruise ships are in, and Viru gate is a slow-moving queue.
These 4-star hotels sit in and around that core and along its edges. Nunne Boutique Hotel, Palace Hotel Tallinn a member of Radisson Individuals, My City Hotel and The Three Sisters Hotel are inside or hard against the walls, while Hestia Hotel Kentmanni, Hilton Tallinn Park, Nordic Hotel Forum, Centennial Nexus Hotel Tallinn, Radisson Blu Hotel Olümpia and Hessnery Hotel sit in the streets just beyond, and Mercure Tallinn, Hampton by Hilton Tallinn, Oru Hub Hotel Tallinn Handwritten Collection and Tallinn Apartment Hotel lie further out. Couples take the Old Town addresses, families the apartment and family-room options, business travellers the larger properties.

Plan your stay
Getting there and around
A complete medieval walled town with a start-up city bolted on. The Old Town is walkable end to end: the Toompea to Kalamaja traverse runs 4 km, starting at Freedom Square, climbing through the Danish King's Garden onto Toompea, taking in Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms, then descending Pikk jalg into the lower town, crossing Raekoja plats and following Pikk past the Great Guild and the Three Sisters to the Fat Margaret gate tower, then under the railway into Kalamaja along Vana-Kalamaja to Telliskivi, finishing at the Balti Jaam market. Cobbles most of the way — proper shoes. Kadriorg lies east along the tram line.
When to go
Two nights covers the Old Town, Toompea and one museum properly. Three lets you add Kalamaja, Telliskivi and Kadriorg without rushing, which is where the city stops being a film set. Four or more makes sense if you are using Tallinn as a base for Lahemaa National Park, an hour east by car. In summer the Old Town fills up: come at 8am and the cobbles between Pikk and Lai are empty and echoing, but at 1pm in July, when three cruise ships are in, Viru gate is a slow-moving queue.
