3-star hotels in Tallinn
A shortlist of 15 three-star hotels in Tallinn, chosen for travellers who want a medieval walled town with a start-up city bolted on. Every one is rated by real guests, from 4.1 to 4.8 out of 5.
Staying in Tallinn
Tallinn packs a complete medieval walled town — 2 km of standing wall, twenty surviving towers and a functioning 1404 town hall — beside a modern city of design shops and bars. These 3-star hotels sit on both sides of that line. Hektor Container Hotel is on Telliskivi, in the old railway workshops where the design shops and half the good bars are; Iglupark is at Lennusadama 7 on the sea; Citybox Tallinn City Center is on Laeva 1, and Hestia Hotel Seaport on Uus Sadama 23, both close to the harbour. Others spread east and south: ibis Tallinn Center Hotel on Juhkentali 28, City Yard Inn Hotel on Narva Mnt 9J, Pirita Marina Hotel & Spa out at Purje 9, U11 Hotel & Spa on Uuslinna and Karlson Lux Apart Hotel on Virbi.
The mix suits different trips. Couples get spa and waterfront addresses such as Pirita Marina and U11. Families have family rooms at U11, City Yard Inn, Taanilinna Hotel and Hestia Hotel Seaport. Business travellers have business centres at Hektor Container Hotel, Citybox Tallinn City Center and Pirita Marina, plus 24-hour front desks at several. For a short break, the Old Town and harbour addresses — Taanilinna Hotel on Uus 6, Godart Rooms on Olevima Gi, Hestia Hotel Seaport — keep the cobbles within easy reach.

Getting there and around
From the site's own notes: the Old Town is a complete medieval walled town, and Kalamaja is ten minutes north of the walls. Telliskivi Creative City sits in the old railway workshops behind the Balti Jaam market. Noblessner, a former submarine yard on the sea, has Põhjala's taproom and a swimming spot. Kadriorg is east along the tram line. A four-kilometre walking traverse runs from Freedom Square up through the Danish King's Garden onto Toompea, down Pikk jalg into the lower town, past the Fat Margaret gate tower and under the railway into Kalamaja to Telliskivi and the Balti Jaam market — cobbles most of the way, so wear proper shoes.
When to go
Come at 8am and the cobbles between Pikk and Lai are empty and echoing. Come at 1pm in July, when three cruise ships are in, and Viru gate is a slow-moving queue. Two nights covers the Old Town, Toompea and one museum properly. Three lets you add Kalamaja, Telliskivi and Kadriorg without rushing, which is where the city stops being a film set. Four or more makes sense if you use Tallinn as a base for Lahemaa National Park, an hour east by car.
