Staying in Tallinn

Tallinn is a complete medieval walled town with a start-up city bolted on: cobbles, bastions, Kalamaja's wooden streets and Telliskivi's bars. The Old Town is the real thing — 2 km of standing wall, twenty surviving towers, a functioning 1404 town hall, and a street plan that has not been rationalised. The lower town around Raekoja plats is merchants' Tallinn; Toompea, up the limestone hill through Pikk jalg gate, was where the nobility and the bishops sat, and it still feels administratively separate. These ten hotels sit inside that fabric or on its edge. Vene 9, Pühavaimu 13 15, Rataskaevu 7, 7 Rataskaevu Tn, 69 Pikk and 17 Suur Karja put you in the lower town lanes. Rävala Puiestee 3 and 12 Lembitu are just outside the walls in the business quarter, Tornimäe 3 stands by the harbour side, and Rannamäe Tee 3 is further out.

Getting there and around

The site describes the Old Town as a walking proposition: a traverse from Toompea to Kalamaja runs 4 km, starting at Freedom Square, climbing through the Danish King's Garden onto Toompea, descending Pikk jalg into the lower town, then following Pikk past the Great Guild and the Three Sisters to the Fat Margaret gate tower and on under the railway into Kalamaja along Vana-Kalamaja to Telliskivi. Cobbles most of the way, so proper shoes. Kadriorg lies east along the tram line, Kalamaja is ten minutes north of the walls, and Lahemaa National Park is an hour east by car.

When to go

Two nights covers the Old Town, Toompea and one museum properly. Three lets you add Kalamaja, Telliskivi and Kadriorg without rushing, which is where the city stops being a film set. Four or more makes sense if you are using Tallinn as a base for Lahemaa National Park, an hour east by car. In high summer the Old Town fills up when the cruise ships are in, so the early morning is the quietest window; Estonia's summer capital, with its kilometre of shallow sand and century-old mud baths, is the warm-season counterpart.
