The House of the Blackheads is a theatre in Tallinn's Old Town, standing on the cobbles of the lower town between Pikk and Lai. It takes its name from the Blackheads, the brotherhood of unmarried merchants who used the building for their festivities, and its ornate facade is one of the most photographed in the medieval quarter. Visitors come for performances and for the building itself, then walk the surrounding streets, where 2 km of standing wall and twenty surviving towers still define the town plan. The building sits in the merchants' Tallinn around Raekoja plats; Toompea, up the limestone hill through Pikk jalg gate, was where the nobility and the bishops sat. Come at 8am and the cobbles are empty and echoing; come at 1pm in July, when three cruise ships are in, and Viru gate is a slow-moving queue.
