Põlva grew around a church and a manor, and its compact centre still mixes older wooden houses with Soviet-era buildings. Lake Põlva, or Põlva järv, draws people for recreation in the warmer months, and several protected areas and nature reserves lie nearby for hiking, cycling and nature watching. Shops, cafes, a museum and a cultural centre give the town a modest range of services, and it works as a base for day trips to Otepää, Võru and the Setomaa region.

Getting there and around

Põlva is reachable by road, with regular buses from Tartu, about an hour away. Tartu also has the nearest major railway station and airport. By car, the town is reached via national roads. Within Põlva, most places are within walking distance, but for the surrounding countryside a car or bicycle is recommended. Local buses serve some nearby villages, though schedules may be limited.

When to go

Late spring to early autumn is the best time, when the weather is mild and outdoor activities are at their best. Summer brings long daylight hours and chances for swimming, hiking and cycling. Winter can be cold and snowy, appealing for cross-country skiing and winter walks, though some services may be reduced. Spring and autumn are quieter, with colourful landscapes.
