Why people stay in Haapsalu

Haapsalu is Estonia's oldest seaside resort — Tchaikovsky came here in 1867, and the town's identity as a summer retreat for Russian aristocracy is still legible in the wooden villas along the promenade. The Episcopal Castle sits at the center, with the largest single-nave church in the Baltic (Haapsalu Dome Church) inside its walls. The mud baths at the Haapsalu Kuursaal and the town's spa hotels continue the curative tradition. At 9pm on a summer evening, the wooden band pavilion on the promenade is the postcard image.

Recommended as a one- or two-night trip from Tallinn, especially in summer. Skip October to April — the seasonal cafés close, the mud spa reduces hours, and the town gets very quiet. Excellent for couples, families with young children (calm shallow bay for swimming), and anyone with an interest in Baltic-German history. The castle is one of the strongest ruins in Estonia, and the White Lady legend haunts the church wall every full moon in August.

The Fra Mare Thalasso Spa and Haapsalu Kuursaal dominate at $95-$180 a night with mud-bath packages. Villa-conversion boutique hotels like Kongo and Endla run $70-$130. Airbnb in the wooden houses is $60-$110. Best area: the Promenaadi strip and adjacent streets (Lahe, Wiedemanni, Suur-Mere) for walking access to everything. Avoid anything advertised as Haapsalu that's actually across the causeway in Uuemõisa.

Questions about Haapsalu

Is Haapsalu worth a day trip or should I overnight?

Overnight if you can. The evening light on the promenade and the empty castle at dusk are the real experience. Day-trippers miss both.

When does the White Lady legend happen?

Full moon in August, in the north window of the castle chapel. It's a shadow effect at a specific moon angle. The town runs a White Lady Days festival around it.
