Why people stay in Telliskivi

Telliskivi Loomelinnak is a former Soviet-era rail-repair complex behind Balti jaam that's been rebuilt since 2009 into the city's densest cluster of independent restaurants, galleries, coworking spaces, and event venues. Around 250 companies operate here. Fotografiska Tallinn — the photography museum — sits at the north end. On Saturday mornings the Telliskivi flea market fills the parking lot; on Friday nights the courtyards host live music until 2am. At 9pm on a July Saturday it's the loudest, most alive block in the city.

Best if you want to see current Tallinn rather than medieval Tallinn. Skip if you want quiet — the freight trains rumble through Balti jaam next door until 11pm, and event venues thump bass on weekends. Also skip if you need a proper hotel; accommodation here is mostly apartments and small guesthouses. Suits solo travelers, young couples, and anyone who chose Berlin over Vienna.

The neighborhood proper has maybe five small hotels — F1 Rally Hotel and a handful of boutique guesthouses on Telliskivi, Ristiku, and Härjapea streets. Expect $60-$110 for a room. Apartments dominate: $55-$95 for a one-bedroom on Airbnb. The best streets for quiet are Härjapea and the far end of Ristiku; anything on Telliskivi tänav itself will hear late-night event traffic. Kalamaja proper is a five-minute walk if you want more residential calm.

Getting around Telliskivi

Part of

Telliskivi sits directly behind Balti jaam train station — bus 2 from the airport terminates one stop away at Balti jaam (28 minutes, $2). From Old Town, walk 12 minutes west through the train station tunnel or take tram 1 or 2 one stop to Balti jaam. Trams 1 and 2 continue north along Telliskivi tänav. The complex itself is walkable in five minutes end to end. Bolt within central Tallinn is $4-$7.

Questions about Telliskivi

Is Telliskivi the same as Kalamaja?

No, but they’re adjacent. Telliskivi is the creative hub complex; Kalamaja is the residential wooden-house neighborhood just north and west. Five-minute walk between the two.

Is Telliskivi noisy at night?

Yes on weekends — live music venues run until 2am. Weeknights quieter but not silent; the train station is close. Book a room on Härjapea or Ristiku if you want sleep.
