Rotermann is a compact 19th-century factory complex — flour mills, salt storage, grain warehouses — that was rebuilt from 2007 onward into Tallinn's densest cluster of good restaurants, design boutiques, and offices. It sits between Viru Gate and the ferry terminals, so it's the transit sweet spot: five minutes to Old Town, ten to the port, twenty to the airport. At 9pm on a weekday it's lively but not rowdy; on Fridays the office crowd fills the outdoor tables at Sfäär and Platz.
Best area in Tallinn for a first-time business traveler or a food-focused weekend. Skip if you want atmosphere older than fifteen years — despite the brick shells, most of what you touch is 2010s reconstruction. Skip also if you’re on the tightest budget: this is Tallinn's most consistently expensive food district. Great for couples doing three-day itineraries, families with older kids, anyone with an early ferry to Helsinki.
The Nordic Hotel Forum and Metropol sit on the western edge of Rotermann, $110-$180 a night. Getting around Rotermann
Rotermann is a five-minute walk from Viru Gate (Old Town) and Viru Keskus (transit hub). Bus 2 from the airport ends at A. Laikmaa, three minutes' walk south. D-Terminal for Helsinki ferries is a ten-minute walk north on Mere puiestee. Trams 1 and 2 stop at Hobujaama. Everything inside Rotermann is 2-3 minutes on foot. Bolt from the airport is $10-$14.
