Why people stay in Maardu
Maardu is a town of around 15,000 residents, historically built around phosphorite mining and chemical industry, now dominated by the Muuga container port — the largest cargo port in the Baltic states. It's honestly ugly on the industrial side. But it also has Lake Maardu, a genuine swimming lake used by locals in summer, and the Maardu Manor grounds. Almost no tourist infrastructure exists, and there's no good reason to book a Tallinn-area vacation and stay here.
Included in this guide only for completeness and for travelers whose reason to be in the region is Muuga port business or a specific industrial visit. Skip for standard tourism. The lake and manor are legitimately worth an afternoon if you have a car and are cycling the coast, but there's no need to overnight. Better options at every price point exist in Viimsi, Pirita, or the city itself.
Accommodation is limited to two or three business-oriented hotels and a smattering of Airbnb apartments — $50-$85 a night. No boutique or resort options exist. If a work reason brings you here, the Hotel Uikala and similar business properties are fine but basic. Otherwise, stay in Tallinn and drive out for the specific attraction. There are no walkable dining strips.

Getting around Maardu
Bus 101 and 174 from Tallinn's Viru bus terminal reach Maardu in 25-40 minutes, $2. The train from Balti jaam via the Aegviidu line stops at Maardu, 20 minutes, $2. From the airport, Bolt is $18-$22. Without a car the town is spread out and hard to move around efficiently. Muuga port is a 15-minute drive from central Maardu.
