Old Town (Vanalinn)
Inside the medieval wall. Best for first-timers, short trips, and anyone who wants to walk out the door into a fairytale. Downsides: cobblestones are murder on wheeled bags, restaurant prices are 20% higher, and the streets around Suur-Karja get loud with stag groups until 3am on weekends. Doubles $130-310. Try Hotel Telegraaf ($270+), The Barons ($195+), or Old House Guesthouse ($95+) for a budget option inside the walls.
Kalamaja and Telliskivi
Wooden houses, murals, third-wave coffee, quiet at night. A 10-15 minute walk to Old Town. Best for repeat visitors, design-minded travellers, and anyone staying 4+ nights. Doubles $85-160. Hektor Design Hotels ($110), Kalev Spa Hotel ($130), or Tabinoya guesthouse ($62). This is where locals actually live and eat.
Rotermann Quarter
Ex-industrial blocks converted into offices, apartments and hotels between the Old Town and the port. Modern, convenient, but no soul at night — restaurants close early and streets empty out. Good for business travellers and ferry passengers to Helsinki. Nordic Hotel Forum ($155), Metropol Spa ($140), or Radisson Blu Sky ($175).
Kadriorg
Green, calm, art-museum district 25 minutes by tram from the Old Town. Best for quiet trips of 5+ nights, older travellers, and anyone visiting KUMU. Doubles from $95. St. Barbara Hotel and small guesthouses on Poska. Skip if you want to walk everywhere.
Avoid: near the ferry terminals unless you’re catching a boat
The strip along Sadama and Ahtri is convenient for Helsinki ferries and nothing else. Bland chains, no evening life, and you’ll still walk 15 minutes to anywhere good. Only book here if you have an early sailing.
