Day trip to Saaremaa from Tallinn
Estonia's biggest island is a stretch as a day trip — 4 hours each way including a ferry. Better as an overnight, but here's how to do it in one long day if you must.
Wooden windmills at Angla on Saaremaa island
The realistic version
Saaremaa is 220 km southwest of Tallinn including a 27-minute ferry from Virtsu to Kuivastu on Muhu island. Drive time is 3h15m one way with the crossing. A day trip means leaving Tallinn at 06:30 and returning near midnight. Rent a car — no bus tour makes this workable. Ferry is $8 for a car with driver, book on praamid.ee to skip queues in summer.
What to prioritise
Skip the western half. Focus on: Kaali meteorite crater (a 110-metre lake in a 4,000-year-old impact site, $5 entry), Angla windmill hill with five restored 19th-century windmills, and Kuressaare's Episcopal Castle — Estonia's best-preserved medieval fortress with a moat still full of water ($12). Lunch at Kuressaare's Vinoteek Prelude for $18 mains. Bishop's Castle closes 18:00, so time it for early afternoon.
