The train ride
Elron trains leave Balti Jaam every 2 hours from 06:45. Book on elron.ee for $14-18 one way; walk-up is fine except Friday evenings. Journey is 2h5m through forest and farmland. First class ($22) has bigger seats and free coffee — worth it for the return leg. Tartu station is a 15-minute walk from the old town.
One day in Tartu
Start at Raekoja plats to see the leaning house and the Kissing Students fountain. Climb Toomemägi hill for the ruined cathedral and university anatomy theatre. Lunch at Werner on Ülikooli, a 130-year-old café doing hot mains for $12.
